Hill Giants, like humans, have a strong belief system. Their faith centers around the Hill Giant Shaman.

If they fall ill, they ask the Shaman to perform a ritual to cure them. The Shaman also often casts spells during a blessings ceremony to bring good luck to the tribe.

The Hill Giant Shaman is exalted among the giants.

However, in my opinion, the Shaman's magical abilities are amateurish in comparison with human mages. Their magic consists of mostly puffs of smoke and rabbits being pulled from top hats. Yes, even less advanced societies have top hats.

To get closer to them, I heated a stone, then threw it into a pot of water to make it boil. They were astounded by my "magic" and became instantly comfortable with me.

With their help, I discovered the identity of the enormous figure.

After studying the Hill Giant culture in depth, I discovered that they pile their feces in a specific location.

They believe that feces is part of one's soul and should be properly preserved... even the gross bits of undigested corn. When the sun shines on that pile of poop, it casts an enormous shadow, and that's what I saw.

I finally solved the puzzle, and I'll never forget the sight (or horrific smell) of that fecal mountain.
