When he opened the chest, expecting to fight a monster or woo a maiden or at least get a handful of mixed nuts, a fake spring-loaded snake popped out at him.

Loving the prank, the man ordered sorcerers to distribute these surprise chests across the land.

Those who come across the chests may get rich by opening them, but some have lost their lives to the perils inside.
