March 28: Father let me take the boat the go trading alone. He looked me in the eyes at the harbor and told me to come back safely. Did he think I couldn't take care of myself at my age?

I said to him, "Don't worry, father. I'll be home before you know it." He signaled for me to wait. He approached a small boat and sat down on the shore. He supported himself with his hands, then stuck his right foot into the boat and tried to steady itself as the left foot joined it.

Then he slowly took the heavy oars. Tears rolled down my face when I saw his hands shaking. I watched father row to Kakat Island.

After a while, he rowed back with Kakat Bird Eggs in his hand. He gave me the eggs with both hands, and told me I could eat them on the way. He told me to eat a few eggs when I got hungry, and that I should remember to cook them first and not to eat them raw like when I was a child.

Finally, I rowed away from the shore and watched father until he disappeared in the fog.
