You ask him to fill you in on the current situation.

(He gathers himself after a moment.)

"It's... simply too late to call in help from the Jale Science Association or the Ilya Senate. But I do have a favor to ask... Would you please retrieve the dog tags of my fallen comrades from the expedition site? The least I can do is return them home as proof of their wearers' bravery..."
