He must have collected a lot of books about the area for his research.

Even if he doesn't have a local records, there must be other books which contain records about the area.

If he does, you can take another step towards confirming whether there really was a village around here.

You've found the first item of daily life.
If you can find anything else on the list, you can basically prove that the village once existed.
