L36. Unable to Fear

"Hurry! Put the skull in the instrument, Eric." When I got back to the camp I urged Eric behind me to hurry up.

Eric heard me and rushed up to put the skull inside the instrument.

My heart began to race as I watched the readings on the instrument. It was probably nerves, but just as the cause of death was about to come up the instrument crashed.

I stared at the instrument in surprise for 2 seconds and then reluctantly called the engineer over to make repairs.

The engineer and his apprentices said that the repair would take some time, so Eric and I would have to wait until tomorrow. We put the skull in a black box then set out to continue searching the Jelly Rabbit Warrens.

Shortly after we left the camp, the black box opened up by itself, and a faint puff of black smoke appeared. An otherworldly face hid within the misty folds of smoke.

Night fell.

Eric and I dragged our tired bodies home. We slept as though we were dead.

That night, I had a nightmare. I dreamed someone chased me with a bow. Just as I ran out of breath, an arrow pierced my heart, and I woke up.

I woke up in a cold sweat and heard footsteps that did not belong to the camp. It sounded like a giant monster.

I was scared and wanted to run away but I could not move my legs. I told myself that the sound came from a harmless monster.

Fortunately, the sound stopped after six times and I fell asleep again knowing that it was safe.
