It was a fine, sunny day when I arrived at Browney's home with all of my possessions in tow, hoping this would be the first day of our new life together.

Instead, I was met at the door by her parents and a uniformed soldier. They accused me of stealing the family jewels.

I was prompty searched, whereupon they found the love token Browney had given me from the cupboard. I was called every vile name in the book and, worst of all, condemned for swindling the object of my affection.

The insults and accusations continued out into the street, while others watched from their doorways. I will never forget the iciness of their stares as I was driven from the village.

The more I think about what happened today, the angrier I become. How her parents could think me guilty of something so terrible, and without any real proof, is beyond my comprehension.

I even decided to return and attempt to reason with them. Still, I cannot shake the feeling with which all of this has left me.

I've never wanted for anything more in this world than Browney's love...
