Even a mass of matted, tousled hair could not hide the blazing fire in his eyes as they snapped open.

Siropas jolted awake, sitting up in his throne, gasping for breath.

Suddenly, the ground shattered, and burning waves of lava spewed forth. Every step he took left behind a black flame burning in his wake.

The emperor stopped and considered his fate.

There was no time to hesitate. Destruction had overtaken the land, swallowed it whole, replaced lush greenery with fields of blazing flame and thick ash that choked out all life.

The emperor smiled for the first and last time.
